Neuro-OncologyOur neuro-oncology team is derived from experts in neurology, general oncology, neurosurgery, head and neck surgery, neuroradiology, neuropathology and radiotherapay. This inter-disciplinary team focuses on the treatment of primary and metastatic tumors of the brain, head, neck and spine. Our team meets regularly to review cases and quickly relay recommendations to the patient and referring physician. These recommendations take into account not only established but also experimental therapies. Patient outcomes are carefully monitored so that our physicians know exactly which treatment plans have worked the best. Because of our multidisciplinary approach we are able to offer patients a wide variety of treatment options. Surgical options include biopsy as well as computer assisted image guided surgery. Radiation therapy is available as external beam radiation, highly accurate and focuses stereotactic radiosurgery and the use of radiation sensitizing drugs. Chemotherapy is offered using both standard and experimental agents and regimens. Lastly, catheter based therapies are available, such as direct infusion of chemotherapeutic agents or pre-surgical blockage of tumor blood supply in order to lessen the risk of bleeding during surgery. These procedures are carried out with a small nick in the groin. A tiny catheter is then directed to the site of the tumor where therapy is carried out. Some patients will be offered a combination of these techniques, performed in stages. Such staged therapy will be recommended whenever our experts feel that it will improve patient outcomes and lessen the risks of treatment. |
